Welcome to the
Silver Linings of 2023.

2023 may not have been an outstanding year, but there were certainly some standout moments.
Here are some of the good bits.

Barbenheimer.

The simultaneous theatrical release of two films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, in July and August of 2023.

The strong contrast between Barbie, a fantasy comedy by Greta Gerwig about the fashion doll Barbie, and Oppenheimer, an epic biographical thriller by Christopher Nolan about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, scientific director of the Manhattan Project prompted a comedic response from Internet users, including memes, merchandise and memorabilia.

Here’s the trailer 😜

Both films exceeded box-office expectations. But Barbie won the war to become the highest-grossing domestic release in Warner Bros history, surpassing Nolan's The Dark Knight.

Worldwide Box Office
Barbie: $1,441,528,220, budget $145m.
Oppenheimer: $947,090,685, budget $100m.

Pick of the ads.

Game of Thrones actors (and couple) Kit Harington and Rose Leslie reunited for a Make My Money Matter campaign entitled ‘The Hidden Relationship,’ directed by Richard Curtis.

To put pressure on UK banks to stop financing fossil fuel ventures, viewers see Harrington and Leslie take on the role of bank and client in a fake therapy session where they hash out their toxic relationship.

‘Best Friends’ from Uber, continued their celebrity crushes by pairing Robert Di Niro with Asa Butterfield (Otis from Sex Education). The actors connect over their love of ‘eating food and going places’ in this touching film from agency Mother.

Beckham and The Bear.

Yes, it sounds like a children’s book, but we thought these two represented the very best in streaming entertainment this year.

The Bear proved that with this season, they could apply the same anxiety-inducing stress outside of the kitchen, spilling over to a past ill fated family Christmas. The season was not jolly.

Whether you like football, sorry, soccer, or despised the Spice Girls - it did not matter. Beckham was addictive viewing that encapsulated the pressures of modern celebrity status, coupled with unbelievable resilience before mental health was front and centre of everyone’s minds.

Amongst the highly commended were the final chapters of Succession, Sex Education and Billions.
Long may they reign in TV history.

Positive environmental stories from 2023.

Eco-anxiety, climate doom, environmental existential dread - we see these terms used a lot - and we often feel them ourselves.

While there's a lot to be worried about when it comes to the climate and nature crises, we must not lose hope - because hopelessness breeds apathy.

Let’s be be truthful and not downplay or greenwash the situation. But it's also all our job to show that there is hope.

In its World Energy Investment Report, published last month, the IEA showed that for the first time in history investment in solar this year would outstrip investment in oil.

“Clean energy is moving fast – faster than many people realise. This is clear in the investment trends, where clean technologies are pulling away from fossil fuels,” the IEA’s chief, Fatih Birol, said in a statement. “For every dollar invested in fossil fuels, about 1.7 dollars are now going into clean energy. Five years ago, this ratio was one-to-one.”

Beavers are returning to London, and they might protect a local train station from flooding.

Beavers are making a comeback in London for the first time since they were hunted to extinction 400 years ago.

They will be released in Ealing’s Paradise Fields – an eight-hectare site of woodland and wetlands minutes from Greenford Tube station – as part of a project to protect against urban flooding and create diverse wetland habitats.

Australia blocks new coal mine 10km from Great Barrier Reef.

For the first time in history, Australia has blocked the creation of a coal mine under environmental laws.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said the project posed an unacceptable risk to the World Heritage area, which is already highly vulnerable, having suffered four mass bleachings in the past six years due to rising sea temperatures.

Foaming at the mouth.
The superworms making a meal of polystyrene waste.

New research shows the gut of the Zophobas morio beetle larvae contains enzymes capable of breaking down the plastic, which is difficult to recycle>

The larvae of Zophobas morio, a species of beetle, are commonly known as superworms and contain several gut enzymes that are capable of digesting polystyrene, Australian scientists have found.

Polystyrene is a widely used plastic, found in its solid form in everyday items such as containers, lids and disposable cutlery. Polystyrene foam, which is lightweight and consists largely of air, is used in packaging and as an insulation material.

The larvae that snacked on plastic were able to complete their life cycle, becoming pupae and then adult beetles. However, they gained less weight than superworms that were fed a bran diet, and had less healthy gut microbiomes.

Dr Chris Rinke of the University of Queensland, a co-author of the study, said within 24 hours, the superworms started “attacking the polystyrene and eating their way into it”.

“Within 48 hours … the faeces they produce turn from their usual brown – when they eat bran – to white.”

Rinke said the superworms first mechanically shredded the polystyrene foam, and microbes in their gut contained enzymes capable of breaking down polystyrene chains into styrene molecules.

The researchers identified groups of bacteria – including strains of Pseudomonas, Rhodococcus and Corynebacterium – that contain enzymes linked to polystyrene degradation. They still need to determine which of these enzymes are most efficient and could be produced at scale.

The Guardian

Human nature needs nature.

At Purpose Conference, Chris Grant Co-Founder of Unyoked  told us that human nature, needs nature. In fact a global study of ~20,000 people found those who spend at least 2hrs in nature throughout the week, report consistently higher levels of health and well-being compared to those who don’t*. Sadly, the average person spends less than 1.5hrs outside per day.**

Earlier this year, Silver Lining Agency and Bank Australia commissioned Sound Environment to capture audio recordings at the 2,100 hectare Bank Australia conservation reserve, of the many precious native birds and animals that call the reserve home. The results was ‘4 Days in Winter‘ which you can now stream on Spotify or  Music. Search ‘Bank Australia’ to listen to 1hr 45mins of pure nature.

Real time quadrophonic audio also streams the foyer at Bank Australia's head office, where you might hear the 25 endangered Red Tail Black Cockatoos, thunder roll slowly from the left to right and frogs calling from newly formed ponds and wetlands.

Word of the Year is Rizz.
Language experts choosing the Oxford word of the year 2023 were dazzled by a bright young thing, selecting a relative newcomer, "rizz," for the top spot.

Derived from the word "charisma," "rizz" refers to a person's ability to attract a romantic partner through "style, charm or attractiveness," dictionary publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) said in its announcement Monday. The word received more than 32,000 votes from the public, OUP added.

The publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary added that the word can also be used as a verb, in the phrase "rizz up," meaning to attract or chat up a person

The other finalists were "prompt," the instruction given to an artificial intelligence program that influences the content it creates; "situationship," which means a romantic partnership that is not considered to be formal or established; and lastly, "Swiftie" - the name given to an avid fan of singer Taylor Swift.

In 2022, Oxford's word of the year was "goblin mode," a colloquial term for behavior that is unapologetically lazy in a way that rejects social norms.

Food Trends of the Year.

Ramen

Last year, our most popular social videos were those featuring 2-minute noodles. Then we started seeing people hacking store-bought spicy ramen noodles on TikTok and Instagram (they even added cheese!). Now, searches for ramen recipes on taste have increased 307% since last year.

Mayo roast potatoes

You name it, we’ve tossed our potatoes in it this year! It all started with kewpie, when we realised that mayo can make the outside of a cheese toastie golden – so why not potatoes? We’ve now tried it with burger sauce and have taken them to another level

Cottage pie

Did cottage pie ever stop trending? Well no, not really. But it’s definitely had a comeback this year, with searches up 63% year on year. Most popular right now are cottage pies with flavour profile twists (like this French onion one) or ones where you use potato goods from the freezer aisle instead of mash (hello, pommes!)

Tabbouleh

Tabbouleh is having a moment… and we’re pretty happy about it! We’re seeing searches on taste up 1925% year-on-year and our Instagram feed is full of vibrant shots of this herby Levantine salad. We love this super easy version.

Rose and vodka pasta

Rose pasta has taken over Insta in 2023 – and it’s not surprising, because it’s creamy and dreamy. Lots of the ones we’ve seen have also featured vodka. This version doesn’t have alcohol in it, but it is an affordable family friendly (and still beautifully pink) version.

Taste 2023

Matildas.

The Matildas showed us their best ever finish at a FIFA Women’s World Cup. A blistering 2-0 victory over Denmark booked a place in final eight of the FIFA Women's World Cup against England.

In the 63rd minute, Sam Kerr decided to take matters into her own hands. with no one around her in support, she unleashed a howitzer from well outside the area. It nestled into the back of the net for the equaliser, proving – not that Australia had any doubt - why she is considered by many to be one of the best players in the world.

Grand Finals, sealed with a Kiss.

After two seasons that saw lopsided results in Grand Finals, the Magpies and Lions treated us to a cracker. The win elevated the Magpies to 16 V/AFL premierships, levelling both Essendon and Carlton (and wouldn’t supporters of those clubs just hate that?), and was the first since the 2010 Grand Final replay, that saw the Pies get over the Saints.

Penrith are the 2023 NRL premiers once again after a grand final for the ages that will long be remembered as one of the greatest deciders ever played. On a steamy in Sydney the Panthers became the first team in 40 years to win three straight premierships after staging a scarcely believable comeback, overcoming a 16-point deficit with 26 minutes to go at Accor Stadium.

2023 Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards.

The judges of the Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards have studied more than 1,800 images submitted from 85 countries and the overall winner for 2023 – drumroll, please, for this is a photo that welcomes musical accompaniment – is a kangaroo striking an air guitar pose.

The picture of a female western grey kangaroo was taken by photographer Jason Moore early one morning in a wildflower field in the suburbs of Perth, Australia.
